Phuket High season figures for tourists remains bleak, despite the huge drop in fuel prices internationally. Hotel figures for occupancy are currently at 55% occupancy rate, compared to 80% on last years figures. The reasons for this being the current world financial climate and the ongoing political turmoil in Thailand. Many countries still have travel advisories in effect, warning tourists not to visit areas where pro- and anti-government demonstrations are taking place. Also, the economic crisis in the US and Europe has caused potential tourists to delay or cancel their travel plans in order to save money. The Loy Krathong Festival takes place in Thailand and Phuket on the 12th November this year. This festival, falls in the 'not to be missed' category and if you believe in luck, joining in, is a 'must do'. It is a celebration that will leave you with the fondest memories of your visit to Phuket. The Krathong is placed in the water by you and your loved one. On releasing the kratong, you can help your fortunes along a little by placing personal items on the floating platform. Some put nail clippings or strands of hair into the krathong, in the belief that the sins of the past year will be washed away; coins too are often placed inside as a way of making merit. For the romantic at heart and young couples, Loi Krathong is the time to make a wish for happiness together and success in love. You will at this festival see many of the thai girls dressed in their traditional thai costumes.

28th November 2008 : Bangkok Airports Closed!!!.
Despite the worldwide economic problems, a group of brainwashed protesters decided to not only severly damage the Thai economy further but to also hurt, disrupt and inflict extra financial burden on their fello Thai and foreign tourists. Both Bangkok Airports as of today the 28th Nov remain closed and occupied by the mob in yellow shirts. The government has now announced a state of emergency at the airports and so the police and military will now have to go in and remove them. It is unclear when this will be done and how long it will take.
In the mean time Phuket International Airport is open as normal. Flights for anywhere other than Bangkok are arriving as scheduled. If you are stuck in Bangkok waiting to come to Phuket then there are Bus and VIP mini bus services available although it is a long drive, around 10 hours.
Thai Airways has said that it is planning to use an alternative military Airport (U-Tapao) around 1 hour from Bangkok for its international and Domestic flights until this mess is resolved. It is possible also to get a flight from this airport to Phuket.

Into the 7th Day of the Bangkok airports occupation and no immediate end in sight to the crisis and a real possibility of an escalation in the stalemate looks inevitable.

Phuket Carnival is just around the corner starting on the 15th and ending on the 20th Dec. Location is Patong Beach where aside from the actual carnival pro sessions there are large numbers of stalls from local restaurants and eateries offering food from around the world, not only thai, live bands and shows will appear every night. Entertainment is also on show of tradional thai culture from various regions across Thailand, it all kicks off on the 15th with a grand fireworks display.
